Who is responsible
I am: Peter van Hees, in Belgium. I run this site and its newsletter in my own name. For anything about your data, write to hello@petervanhees.com.
When you subscribe
You can subscribe from any page, for example to get my free ebooks.
What I keep. Your email address, your name if you give it, the dates on which you signed up and confirmed your address, and the page you signed up from. Ghost, the service my site runs on, may also record your approximate location (country), derived from your connection when you sign up. For each email I send, Ghost records whether it was delivered, whether you opened it, and which links you clicked.
What I use it for, and on what basis.
- To send you my newsletter: updates when Grok Bot changes or when I change my own setup, and new ideas on AI Agents, a few times a year, when there is something worth sending. And to give you access to the free ebooks on the subscribers' page. That is your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)), given when you subscribed and confirmed your address.
- To see which emails and pages are useful, so I write better ones. That is my legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)); I look at it per email, not to build a profile of you.
- To be able to show that you consented. That is a legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c), with Article 7(1)).
When you use the contact form
The form on my Contact and Keynotes pages sends your name, email address, and message to me through Formspree, a form service in the United States, which forwards it to my mailbox. I use it only to answer you. That is your request (Article 6(1)(b)), or my legitimate interest in answering (Article 6(1)(f)).
When you visit the site
Ghost counts page visits for me with its built-in web analytics, to see which pages people read. Signing in to your subscription uses a cookie that keeps you signed in; the site needs it to work.
What I never do
I do not sell or share your address, I do not use it for advertising, and I do not profile you. No decision about you is made automatically.
Who handles it for me
Ghost (Ghost Foundation) hosts this site and the subscriber list and sends the emails, under its data processing agreement (ghost.org/dpa). Formspree receives contact form messages. Emails you send me are held by the provider of my mailbox. Some of these services store data outside the European Economic Area; where they do, their agreements apply the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Write to me for details.
How long I keep it
As long as you are subscribed. When you unsubscribe, I remove your address within a month. If your address has been inactive for three years, I delete it. Ask me to delete it sooner and I will. Messages you send me I keep as long as our exchange needs them.
Your rights
Unsubscribe with one click from any email; that withdraws your consent, and what was sent before stays lawful. You may ask to see your data, to correct or delete it, to restrict or object to its use, or to receive it in a file you can take elsewhere: write to hello@petervanhees.com and I will answer within a month. What you downloaded stays yours either way.
Complaints
If you think I mishandle your data, tell me first if you like. You may also complain to the Belgian Data Protection Authority, Rue de la Presse 35, 1000 Brussels (dataprotectionauthority.be), or to the authority where you live or work.
